Kern Studio

Human judgment.
AI velocity.

We design it and build it — one team, brief to deployed product. AI handles what doesn't need a human. We handle what does.

§ 01 — Capabilities

What we do

Two disciplines, one practice. The team that designs it builds it — so the work stays coherent from the first mark to the deployed product.

4 disciplines

Creative

The look, the language, the ideas. Identity and image-making with a point of view.

  • 01 /

    Brand identity

Naming, marks, type and colour systems — built on genuine research, finished with a considered eye.

  • 02 /

    Campaign & poster

Campaign systems, posters, launch graphics. Typographically led. Made to hold a wall.

  • 03 /

    Editorial design

Publications, reports, and the production systems that keep them shipping on schedule.

  • 04 /

    Digital collage

Image-making and art direction for screens — AI in the toolkit, never the author.

3 disciplines

Technical

The build, the systems, the code. Engineering that starts from the design intent.

  • 01 /

    Web — front & back

Designed and built by the same team. No translation layer, no friction between intent and output.

  • 02 /

    Automation & AI

Internal tools, pipelines, and AI features scoped to the actual problem. Built to last, not to impress.

  • 03 /

    Security advisory

Posture reviews, tooling evaluation, and roadmaps. A senior read, available on demand.

§ 02 — How we use AI

Built with AI

We use AI where it earns its place — the scaffolding, the variation, the iteration. Every decision that requires judgement stays with a person. The distinction is deliberate, and we're precise about where the line sits.

100%Human sign-off on every decision
The human

Humans decide

Taste, direction, the final call. Nothing ships without a person who answers for it.

  • The brief — and whether to reframe it
  • Creative direction and taste
  • Architecture and engineering judgement
  • Art direction, the typographic eye
  • Client relationships, from brief to close
The machine

AI accelerates

We hand AI the typing, not the thinking. It runs at a speed no team can match by hand.

  • First drafts and early exploration
  • Boilerplate, scaffolding, plumbing
  • Variation and iteration at speed
  • Copy passes, refactors, test coverage
  • The repetitive work that used to cost weeks

Machine speed. Human taste.

Selected work

  • Counterpoint

A research lab needed an identity its own people could keep using — and the tooling to actually do it.

    Creative

A custom variable wordmark, a constrained editorial grid, and a full system of templated layouts for reports and slides.

    Technical

An AI-assisted template generator that renders on-brand documents from structured input — the system, made operable, shipped in three weeks.

  • Saaki

Naming, brand, and a direct-to-consumer store for a small-batch roastery — designed and shipped in one engagement.

    Creative

Name, identity, packaging system, and the art direction for launch — a complete visual world from a blank page.

    Technical

A headless storefront with payments, inventory, and a subscription flow — scaffolded with AI, live the same week the brand landed.

  • After Image

A print quarterly that also had to live on the web without losing its editorial spine.

    Creative

Editorial direction, art direction, and the type system for a 96-page print object on a four-week cadence.

    Technical

A publishing pipeline and a reading-first web edition that builds straight from the same source as print.

  • Quiet Audit

A fintech mid-raise needed a security read the board would trust — and a document they would actually open.

    Creative

The report itself, designed as a clear editorial document — findings legible to a board, not buried in a template.

    Technical

A full security-posture review and remediation roadmap, scoped and signed off in a week.

  • Halftone

A city-wide print biennale wanted a campaign and a home for it that felt like the same idea.

    CampaignWeb

    Creative

A six-poster series, each demonstrating a single principle of editorial layout, plus the campaign system around it.

    Technical

A program microsite with scheduling and ticketing — fast, accessible, and built to last the run.

§ 04 — Method

How we work

One team. Whole problem.

Design and engineering under the same roof means the work doesn't break in transit. We own it from the first mark to the deployed product — and AI runs on every part that doesn't need a human in the loop.

  • No handoff seam

Nothing gets lost translating a design file into a brief for someone else. The people who decide how it looks decide how it is built — and AI never sits between them.

  • AI types, humans decide

We don't hand the thinking to a model. We hand it the typing — the drafts, the scaffolding, the variations — and keep every choice that matters in human hands.

  • Fast, and accountable

Speed without ownership is just risk. One team owns the whole thing, brief to deploy — so moving fast never means no one answers for it.

The space between is where it matters.
